week 7: unit 3: career timeline

 

 

In this task, I’m going to create a general timeline and a personal timeline following through with the different directions you can go.

General timeline

Stage 1 education- In stage one, you should start at college studying a course related to media, specifically film and tv and you must study that. Later on, you would either move to stage 2 or go to university if you do go to university you could go straight to finding work which is stage 3 if its only temporary. If not it would be stage 4 which is a safe contract job.

Stage 2 apprenticeships and internships- In stage 2 which can be followed from college or university depending on the contacts you make. If you move to an internship you won’t be paid but you will gain very important experience which you can use to move onto stage 3 or 4 depending what job you get offered. However, you could also be offered a job in the company you’re doing the internship for. Apprenticeship is practically the same but you get paid to work.

Stage 3 freelance work- In freelance work it is you working for yourself. Now depending what line you went down whether it was lighting or sound it doesn’t matter because you start a company doing what you want to do you have to take out a business loan and hope to get work.

Stage 4 permanent work – When you reach a certain age and you need job security it is better to just start working for a company stably otherwise you may not get any work.

My timeline

Now- studying at canterbury college.

2 years- gap year.

3 years- apprenticeship or internship.

4 years- freelance lighting or editing.

In the background directing.

10 years- make short films occasional lighting.

20 years- big shot director.

Week 4: unit 3: Job roles Cinematographer

What you have to do.

When being a cinematographer you have a lot of responsibility for example camera matainence it is your responsibility to fix your camera if anything bad happen’s to it. You also are In charge of what camera is operating  at what time. You have to be ready to create the perfect shot at all times.

How to become  cinematographer.

Starting a career in cinematography is very difficult and there is certain paths you need to go down. Step 1 would probably be get some sort of degree in photography because cinematography and photography go hand in hand in the sense of frames and setting up shots and things like that. Then I’d move on to university. University is great for your contacts as you can meet loads of intresting people in university who could benifits your career massively. Another line would be an internship this is when you and work for a company for free and gain experience also you can get characters and can lead to a job. A apprenticeship is another very similar line to go down it just means you get paid to learn and expand your contacts. After this you could start freelance work which is when you work self employed not for a company, but with cinematography it is all about your style. Director’s employ you because of your style so if the Director was picking who’s going to be in his crew for a horror movie and he watched another horror movie and loved it and you were the most behind the camera he’d want you on his film, but you’d have to start off freelancing because you would need to establish your style.

week 3: unit 3: Job role: Foley sound engineer.

How to become a sound/Foley engineer.

To become a sound engineer there is many paths you can go down and many things you can do for starters theatre work. Theatre work will gain you experience and a knowledge base on how sound works it will also build your skills up to move on to something bigger. Next theirs internships and apprenticeships this also allows you to build skills up but can also lead to permanent jobs in the TV or film studio. You can also go to university this is a very good thing to do as you get good connections for later on in life.

When looking for permanent jobs the best way to go is threw freelance work as freelance means you can literally be doing anything towards sound. So you could be a sound assistant, a sound engineer, a sound designer or a sound mixer. The advantage of freelancing is it can also lead to you being apart of the Foley sound team being a Foley engineer or a Foley designer.

My sound engineer.

I have chosen Gary Rydstrom. Gary Rydstrom is known for his work on Jurassic park (1993), Finding Nemo (2003) and Terminator 2 Judgement Day (1991). When working on Jurassic park (1993) he struggled to create all the prehistoric noises. Most of the noises came from a dog or a horse but the Velociraptors were in fact tortoises having sex. He uses his dog buster for sounds in Jurassic park and terminator as when he growls whilst playing with his toys he makes the perfect roar with added effects of course.

University courses.

Course 1 is at Aberystwyth University it is a 3 year course on TV and film studies. To apply you need a GCSE C in English. The entry fee is £9000.

Course 2 is at Anglia Ruskin University it is also a 3 year course but its on film and TV production.To apply you need a GCSE C grade in English. Entry fee is £9000.

week 2: unit 3: Job roles: lighting

How to become a lighting engineer.

To become a lighting engineer you need to follow a career path starting with work experience. As in the film and TV world its not just about having grades you’ll also need experience in the field your going into so if you were going into lighting you’d need to do a bit of work in the lighting part of the industry. You can also go to university as not only will you learn more about lighting and gain experience you need, you’ll also make friends who can be connections in the future. This would then lead on to you either becoming a free lance, having an internship or an apprenticeship. Free lance work is completely self employed you have your own equipment and you go to the set and at the end they’ll let you go as in you don’t stay on. A internship is when you work for a company for free for the experience. An apprenticeship is very similar to an internship accept from you get paid for an apprenticeship.

What a lighting engineer dose.

A lighting engineer has a very important job they have the task of setting up a perfect lighting rig to give the best amount of light to create the perfect set. They also have to do lighting maintenance which means they have to fix any problems with the lights. Free lancers will carry there own equipment and make sure they maintenance regularly to avoid any maintenance on set.

A Director and his story.

For my director I picked Colin Trevorrow. Colin Trevorrow was making films from the age of 12,he studied film and dramatic writing. when he graduated he wrote and directed his first film Home Base (2002) which was a viral success. He then went on to direct his first feature film Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) which was written by one of his friends he met on his internship on Saturday night live.
